Brighton Museum sits in the Royal Pavilion Gardens, in what were the stables and riding house of the Prince Regent's extraordinary Indo-Saracenic seaside palace next door.

The fashion and style gallery is the standout: Brighton has a long association with dress, performance and self-presentation, and the collection traces clothing from the eighteenth century to the present with an emphasis on how people used it to construct identity. The twentieth-century art and design holdings include a strong Art Nouveau and Art Deco furniture collection, with Dali's Mae West Lips sofa among the best-known pieces.

Other galleries cover archaeology of Sussex, world art with material from Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and Brighton's own history — the Regency resort, the piers, the mods and rockers, and the city's role in LGBTQ history, which the museum treats substantively.
