Hungary under Kadar was described as the happiest barracks in the socialist camp — goulash communism, with more consumer goods and less overt repression than elsewhere in the bloc after 1956, though the compromise had obvious limits.

The Retro Elmenykozpont recreates the texture of that period through the objects of daily life: the Trabant and Lada, a police car visitors sit in, the furniture, appliances, packaging, toys, magazines and music of the 1970s and 80s, alongside material on Hungarian space exploration — Bertalan Farkas flew on a Soyuz in 1980 as the first Hungarian in orbit.

The approach is interactive and nostalgic rather than critical, and visitors expecting an account of the secret police, the 1956 uprising or the border fence should note that those subjects are covered elsewhere in Budapest, particularly at the House of Terror.

Taken as social history it is engaging, and it works well with families.
