The Cap San Diego is the largest seagoing museum cargo ship in the world, built in 1961 for the South America run — one of six sister ships nicknamed the white swans of the Atlantic for their unusually elegant lines, built at a moment when general cargo liners were about to be made obsolete by containerisation.
She is moored at the Uberseebrucke in Hamburg and visitors move through the whole vessel: holds, engine room, bridge, radio room, galley, crew quarters and the officers' accommodation, which is considerably grander than expected.
The ship remains operational and makes occasional voyages, which is unusual for a museum vessel of her size.
Cabins can be booked for overnight stays, functioning as a hotel.
Hamburg's harbour, the Speicherstadt warehouse district and the Elbphilharmonie are all nearby.
