Planning your visit
The Chengdu Natural History Museum, run by Chengdu University of Technology, holds one of China's most significant palaeontological collections — and its centrepiece is Hezhi's Mamenchisaurus, an enormous sauropod from Sichuan with a neck accounting for nearly half its total length, among the longest necks of any animal that ever lived.
Sichuan's Jurassic beds are exceptionally rich, and the dinosaur hall draws almost entirely on regional finds.
Beyond palaeontology, the museum covers geology and mineralogy — including material relating to the Longmenshan fault and the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, which killed nearly 70,000 people in the province and which the museum treats as a subject of earth science and of memory.
The building, opened in 2022, is a striking angular structure meant to evoke Sichuan's mountain ranges.
