Choco-Story Brussels offers an immersive journey through over 5,000 years of cocoa history, from ancient civilizations to the Belgian praline, featuring demonstrations and tastings.

Planning your visit

Belgium's chocolate reputation rests on the praline — a filled chocolate shell, invented in Brussels in 1912 by Jean Neuhaus, whose family pharmacy had been coating medicines in chocolate to make them palatable. The ballotin box was invented by his wife shortly after.

Choco-Story Brussels covers that alongside the wider history: cacao among the Maya and Aztec, the Spanish introduction, the colonial plantation economy that supplied Europe, and the Belgian industry that grew from Congo cocoa — a connection the museum notes.

Live praline-making demonstrations run continuously, with tastings, and workshops let visitors make their own.

Brussels has a dense concentration of chocolate shops, several of them serious, and the museum functions as an orientation before spending money in them.

It sits near the Grand Place.

Bookable options are museum visits. Current availability is listed below.
