The City Palace occupies a seventh of walled Jaipur, and part of it remains the residence of the former royal family — the Kachhwaha Rajputs, who ruled here from 1727 when Jai Singh II moved his capital from Amber and built India's first planned city.
The museum covers the collections that dynasty accumulated. The textile galleries hold court dress including garments of Sawai Madho Singh I, who was reportedly seven feet tall and enormously heavy. The armoury holds Rajput weapons of exceptional quality. Manuscripts, miniature painting and carpets fill the rest.
The Diwan-i-Khas holds two silver urns of 345 kilograms each, the largest silver objects in the world, made to carry Ganges water to England for Madho Singh II's voyage to Edward VII's coronation, since he would not drink anything else.
