The Danish War Museum occupies the Tojhus, a seventeenth-century arsenal built by Christian IV beside Christiansborg, and its ground floor is among the most striking museum spaces in Copenhagen: a 156-metre vaulted hall, the longest of its kind in Europe, lined with historic cannon.
Upstairs the armoury holds one of the largest collections of historic small arms in the world, alongside armour and edged weapons.
The exhibitions cover Danish military history from the 1500s — a period when Denmark was a major Baltic power, before losing Sweden, Norway, and eventually Schleswig-Holstein in the disastrous war of 1864 that shaped the modern small state.
Recent deployments are covered, including Afghanistan, where Denmark suffered proportionally high casualties, presented through the experience of individual soldiers.
