The Evita Museum occupies a building Eva Peron herself put to use: a mansion in Palermo that her foundation converted into a shelter for single mothers and their children, one of hundreds of social institutions the Fundacion Eva Peron established in the late 1940s. Opening it as her museum in 2002, on the fiftieth anniversary of her death at 33, was a deliberate choice — the setting argues for the social-works side of her legacy rather than the mythology.

The collection is built around her possessions: the Dior and Fath gowns, the tailored suits she wore for political work, personal documents, film and radio recordings, and material on the campaign that won Argentine women the vote in 1947. The rooms follow her life in order — provincial childhood, radio and film career in Buenos Aires, marriage to Peron, the years as first lady, the renunciation of the vice-presidency, her illness and the extraordinary public mourning that followed.

The museum does not pretend to neutrality about a figure Argentina still argues over, and understanding that is part of the visit. Allow around ninety minutes.
