FAM Fahlanna Art Museum works the seam between Lanna heritage and contemporary Thai art, which is a productive place to stand in Chiang Mai. Lanna — the northern Thai kingdom that ruled from Chiang Mai for several centuries before absorption into Siam — has a distinct visual culture: its own script, textile traditions, temple architecture and decorative vocabulary, noticeably different from central Thai forms. The museum presents that alongside modern work responding to it, with interactive elements and rotating exhibitions.

Traditional textiles are a particular focus, and northern Thailand's weaving traditions, including those of the hill communities, are among the richest in mainland Southeast Asia. Seeing them displayed as art rather than as souvenir stock is a useful corrective to the night market.

Chiang Mai has developed a substantial contemporary art scene over the past two decades, and venues like this sit alongside artist-run spaces and galleries across the city. A café is attached, and the museum works well as a couple of hours out of the heat.
