Al-Attarine Madrasa

Built between 1323 and 1325 by Sultan Abu Said Uthman II, the Al-Attarine Madrasa is a prime example of Marinid architecture, featuring elaborate zellij tilework, carved cedarwood, and stucco arabesques. Located near the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and the Souk al-Attarine, it served as a center for Islamic learning and remains a significant historical and architectural landmark in Fes.

Planning your visit

The Al-Attarine Madrasa is one of the finest surviving examples of Marinid architecture, and it is small enough that its quality registers immediately. Built between 1323 and 1325 by Sultan Abu Said Uthman II, it sits beside the Souk al-Attarine — the spice and perfume market that gives it its name — and close to the Al-Qarawiyyin mosque and university at the heart of the Fes medina. It functioned as a residential college for students attending Qarawiyyin, with cells for around sixty on the upper floors.

The central courtyard is the reason to come: zellij tilework in intricate geometric patterns to shoulder height, carved stucco arabesques above, and a band of cedarwood carved and painted with Kufic inscription beneath the roof, all around a marble basin. The density of decoration in a courtyard barely larger than a room is remarkable, and the workmanship is generally reckoned finer than at the larger Bou Inania madrasa nearby.

Allow twenty to thirty minutes; it is one room and a staircase. The medina around it is the real navigational challenge — Fes el-Bali is a dense warren of several thousand lanes, effectively impossible to navigate reliably on a first visit.
