The Musee du Parfum Fragonard is free, guided, and takes about half an hour — which makes it one of the better small diversions in central Paris. Fragonard, the Grasse perfume house, operates it near the Opera Garnier in a nineteenth-century townhouse, and the tour covers the history of perfume from Egyptian and Roman use through the courts of Europe to modern production, with antique bottles, distillation equipment, an organ of raw materials, and explanation of how a fragrance is actually composed.

The guides are perfumery staff, and the technical content is genuinely informative: the structure of top, heart and base notes, why some materials are still extracted by enfleurage, what distinguishes an eau de toilette from an extrait. It ends in the boutique, which is the commercial logic of the free admission, and there is no obligation to buy.

The Opera Garnier is a two-minute walk, and the pairing is natural — both are products of the same Second Empire Paris.
