The Casanova Museum occupies Palazzo Zaguri, a fourteenth-century palace near Campo Santo Stefano that had stood empty for decades before its restoration, and the building's slightly decayed grandeur suits the subject. Thirty-six rooms across several floors present the life of Giacomo Casanova through more than 500 original items and around 100 thematic installations — costumes, documents, period objects, projections and staged scenes.

Casanova is worth more than his reputation suggests. He was a Venetian who worked as a lawyer, soldier, violinist, spy, alchemist and lottery director, escaped from the Doge's prison under the Piombi lead roof in one of the more remarkable jailbreaks on record, knew Voltaire, Catherine the Great and Mozart's librettist, and wrote a memoir of some 3,700 pages that remains a primary source for eighteenth-century European social life. The seduction is the part everyone remembers; the museum covers the rest.
