The GRAMMY Museum sits in LA Live downtown, next to the arena where the awards were long held, and it is more substantial than a trophy showcase. Four floors cover the recording process itself — how a song is written, produced, engineered and mixed — with interactive booths where visitors can sing, mix tracks and try instruments, which is the part that holds people longest.
The collection includes significant artefacts: stage costumes, instruments, handwritten lyrics and personal items from across popular music, rotated regularly and supplemented by temporary exhibitions on individual artists that are often the reason to visit at a given moment. The historical galleries treat American popular music seriously across genres, from blues and gospel through jazz, country, rock and hip hop, rather than privileging one.
