The Hash Marihuana and Hemp Museum has operated since 1985, which makes it considerably older than most visitors expect and gives it a claim to being the first of its kind. It sits on the edge of Amsterdam's red light district, and its argument is that cannabis is a subject with a documented history rather than a novelty: the collection covers hemp as an industrial crop for rope, sail and paper, its use in medicine across several civilisations, the politics of twentieth-century prohibition, and the specifics of Dutch tolerance policy.
Artefacts include antique pharmacy jars and patent medicines from when cannabis preparations were routine pharmaceuticals, cultivation equipment, artworks and a small indoor growing area under glass.
It is more sober than the location suggests, and visitors expecting a joke museum tend to find it drier than anticipated — which is arguably the point. It does not sell or permit consumption.
