The Ho Chi Minh Trail was not a trail but a network — thousands of kilometres of roads, paths, fuel pipelines, river crossings and underground facilities running through Laos and Cambodia to supply the war in the south. It was bombed continuously for years, and it was rebuilt continuously, largely by young volunteers, many of them women, working with hand tools under attack.

The museum in Hanoi documents that with over 15,000 artefacts: bicycles modified to carry several hundred kilograms, trucks, engineering equipment, maps, personal effects, and photographs of the road-building brigades. The logistics achievement is the story — moving supplies south under the heaviest aerial bombardment in history, and succeeding well enough to sustain the campaign.

Dioramas and reconstructions cover the living conditions of the trail's workers, including the disease, hunger and unexploded ordnance that killed as many as the bombing.
