The Kingdom of the Railways in the Prater is a model railway installation of genuine ambition rather than a hobby display. Its centrepiece is a large-scale model of Vienna incorporating over 70 recognisable landmarks — the Stephansdom, the Riesenrad, the Hofburg, the Prater itself — with trains, trams and road vehicles moving through the city, and a day-night cycle that lights the buildings.

Beyond the Vienna layout are Austrian alpine sections with mountain railways, tunnels and viaducts, and further modelled regions. Interactive buttons let visitors trigger movements, which is what holds children.

The craft is the appeal: the detail on individual buildings, figures and vehicles rewards close looking, and the engineering behind the operation is on show in places.
