The Liverpool Beatles Museum was founded by Roag Best — half-brother of Pete Best, the band's original drummer — and the collection comes substantially from the Best family and other people directly connected to the band, which gives it unusual provenance. Over 1,000 items across three floors include instruments, clothing, handwritten material, personal effects and equipment, much of it never previously exhibited.
The Pete Best material is naturally strong, covering the Hamburg years and his replacement by Ringo Starr in 1962, which is a story usually told briskly elsewhere.
It sits on Mathew Street, a few doors from the Cavern Club, in the middle of the city's Beatles quarter — which also holds the larger Beatles Story at the Albert Dock, a different and more narrative-driven attraction. Deciding between them, or doing both, is worth a moment's planning.
