Founded in 1947, MASP houses a diverse collection of over 11,000 artworks, including European, Brazilian, African, and Asian art, and is known for its iconic modernist architecture.

Planning your visit

MASP's building is one of the landmarks of Brazilian modernism: Lina Bo Bardi lifted the entire museum on four red concrete piers, leaving a 74-metre span of open plaza beneath it on Avenida Paulista — a public void she considered as important as the galleries above, and which is used for protests, markets and Sunday crowds.

Inside, Bo Bardi's glass easels were equally radical: paintings mounted on transparent panels standing in open space rather than hung on walls, so visitors circulate among them and can see the backs. Removed in the 1990s, they were reinstated in 2015.

The collection is the most significant in the southern hemisphere for European art — Raphael, Bosch, Rembrandt, Goya, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Renoir — assembled rapidly after 1947 by the press magnate Assis Chateaubriand, alongside Brazilian, African and Asian holdings.
