The Macedonian Struggle was the guerrilla conflict fought between roughly 1904 and 1908 in Ottoman Macedonia, in which Greek, Bulgarian and Serbian bands fought each other and the Ottoman authorities for control of a territory each claimed — a struggle over identity as much as land, conducted through schools, churches and villages as well as by armed groups.
The museum in Thessaloniki presents the Greek account of it, using the mansion that housed the Greek consulate during the period, from which the campaign was partly directed. Weapons, documents, photographs, uniforms and dioramas cover the fighters, the diplomacy and the Balkan Wars that followed.
The perspective is explicitly national, which is worth holding in mind — the same events are told very differently in Skopje and Sofia, and the naming dispute between Greece and North Macedonia that persisted until 2018 has roots in exactly this history.
