The Museo del Novecento occupies the Palazzo dell'Arengario on Piazza del Duomo, a Fascist-era building whose spiral ramp now carries visitors up through Italian twentieth-century art, ending in a room with a full-height window looking directly at the cathedral.
The collection's core is Futurism, and Milan is where it belongs — the movement was launched from here in 1909, celebrating speed, machinery and violence, and its major figures Boccioni, Balla and Carrà are represented in depth. Boccioni's Unique Forms of Continuity in Space, among the most reproduced sculptures of the century, is here.
Beyond Futurism the collection runs through metaphysical painting with de Chirico, the interwar Novecento movement, Fontana's slashed canvases and Arte Povera.
The Fontana neon installation in the final room, seen against the Duomo through the glass, is the museum's closing image.
