Bulgaria's National History Museum holds over 650,000 artefacts and occupies a former communist-era government residence in Boyana, on the lower slopes of Vitosha mountain outside central Sofia — a building constructed for the party leadership and repurposed after 1989.
The Thracian gold is the reason to go. The Panagyurishte treasure, a set of ninth vessels in solid gold from the fourth century BC, and the Valchitran treasure are displayed in the treasury, and Thracian metalwork of this quality is found essentially nowhere else. The Thracians left no written literature, so the gold is the primary evidence of a sophisticated culture.
Beyond it, the collection covers prehistory, the medieval Bulgarian empires, Ottoman rule and the modern state.
