The British Music Experience is the only museum dedicated to British popular music, and it sits in Liverpool's Cunard Building on the waterfront — one of the Three Graces, built for the shipping line whose transatlantic crews are widely credited with bringing American records into the city and shaping what became Merseybeat.
Over 600 artefacts cover British music from the 1940s to the present: stage costumes including David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust outfits, instruments played by significant musicians, and material tracing skiffle, the beat groups, prog, punk, new wave, rave and Britpop.
The interactive elements are substantial — visitors can play instruments in a studio space, and the dance floor with motion capture teaches routines from successive eras.
Liverpool's own musical weight is inescapable, and the museum sits within walking distance of the Beatles attractions and the Cavern.
