The Nikola Tesla Museum holds Tesla's ashes, kept in a gilded sphere, along with his personal papers, correspondence, photographs and around 160,000 original documents — the archive was shipped from New York to Belgrade in 1952 by his nephew, and it is inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World register.
Tesla was born in what is now Croatia to Serbian parents, worked in Budapest, Paris and then the United States, and died in a New York hotel in 1943 in reduced circumstances. His work on alternating current, induction motors and radio underpins modern electrical distribution.
The demonstrations are what visitors remember: guides operate working models including a Tesla coil, with volunteers holding fluorescent tubes that light without contact, and an induction motor demonstration showing the rotating magnetic field.
Tours run at set times in English and Serbian, and the demonstrations only happen on them.
