The Samurai Museum Berlin holds over 4,000 objects covering seven centuries — armour, helmets, swords, masks, saddlery and everyday items — assembled by a German collector and opened as a public museum in 2022.
The scale is unusual outside Japan, and the armour in particular is displayed in depth, showing how construction and decoration changed from the functional Kamakura period through the elaborate ceremonial suits of the peaceful Edo centuries.
The presentation is heavily multimedia, with projections, soundscapes and immersive rooms alongside the objects — an approach that draws visitors who would not otherwise engage with Japanese arms and armour, and which purists find excessive.
Tea ceremony demonstrations and a theatre space extend the programme.
Berlin's Asian collections are otherwise concentrated in the Humboldt Forum, which covers different ground.
