The Sichuan Museum is the largest comprehensive museum in southwest China, holding over 300,000 objects, and its distinctive strengths reflect the province's particular history. Sichuan was separated from the Chinese heartland by mountains, developed its own Ba and Shu cultures with bronze traditions unlike anything to the east, and served repeatedly as a refuge when northern dynasties collapsed.

The collection covers Han dynasty stone reliefs and pottery — the tomb bricks depicting harvest, hunting and salt production are among the finest sources on daily life in Han China — along with Buddhist sculpture from the cave temples of the region, Zhang Daqian paintings, ceramics and Tibetan material from the western marches.

Admission is free with advance reservation, and it sits by the Huanhuaxi park near the Du Fu Thatched Cottage, so the two combine naturally.

English labelling is limited, which is the main obstacle for foreign visitors.
