The Strauss family dominated Viennese music for most of the nineteenth century. Johann Strauss the elder made the waltz respectable; his son Johann II wrote the Blue Danube and Die Fledermaus and was known as the Waltz King; his brothers Josef and Eduard continued the business, which was precisely that — an orchestra as a family enterprise, playing dance halls and casinos.
House of Strauss occupies the Casino Zögernitz, a hall of 1837 where all four performed, restored and reopened as a museum with interactive exhibits on the dynasty and Viennese musical life.
Live performances in the original hall are the reason to time a visit accordingly — hearing this music in the room it was written for is a different proposition from the tourist concerts elsewhere in the city.
The New Year's Day concert broadcast worldwide is built almost entirely on Strauss repertoire.
