Valencia's silk industry made the city rich. From the fifteenth century its weavers supplied Spain and its empire, and by the eighteenth century some 5,000 looms worked in the city — the Silk Exchange, the Llotja de la Seda, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the finest civil Gothic building in Europe.
The Silk Museum occupies the College of High Silk Art, the guild headquarters, a fifteenth-century building with a spectacular ceramic-tiled floor depicting the Fama and an assembly hall preserved as the guild used it.
The displays cover the whole process — cocoon to thread to loom — with antique jacquard looms, sample books, garments, and the guild's own archive, which UNESCO lists in its Memory of the World register.
Valencian silk still appears in the fallera dresses worn at Las Fallas.
