Located in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood, the Walters Art Museum houses over 36,000 art objects from various cultures and time periods, providing free access to art and education programs.

William Walters and his son Henry built a collection of over 36,000 objects and gave the whole thing to Baltimore in 1931 — a single family's acquisitions spanning seven millennia, from Egypt and the ancient Near East through Greek and Roman antiquity, Byzantium, Islamic and Asian art, medieval and Renaissance Europe, to nineteenth-century French painting.
The medieval holdings are outstanding: illuminated manuscripts in one of the finest collections in the Americas, ivories, reliquaries and armour. The Islamic manuscripts and the Ethiopian material are similarly strong.
Henry Walters bought entire collections at a stroke, including a Roman palace's contents in 1902, which is why the museum has depth that Baltimore's size would not otherwise support.
Admission is free.
It stands on Mount Vernon Place beside the Washington Monument that preceded the one in the capital.
