The War Museum of Thessaloniki, established in 2000, preserves and exhibits military artifacts from Greece’s modern history, including the Balkan Wars and World Wars I and II.
Planning your visit
Greece fought almost continuously between 1912 and 1949 — two Balkan Wars, the First World War, the Asia Minor campaign that ended in the catastrophe at Smyrna and the population exchange, the Italian and German invasions, the occupation, and then a civil war.
Thessaloniki sat at the centre of much of it. The city was taken from the Ottomans in 1912, hosted the Allied Macedonian Front from 1915, and absorbed hundreds of thousands of refugees from Anatolia.
The War Museum, in a restored barracks of 1900, covers that history with weapons, uniforms, documents, photographs, maps and personal effects, along with artillery and vehicles outside.
The Greek resistance and the occupation years, including the destruction of the city's Jewish community, are part of the account.
