The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw waited nineteen years for a building. Founded in 2005, it operated from temporary premises — a former furniture pavilion, a riverside shed — while successive designs stalled, and finally opened Thomas Phifer's white concrete block on Plac Defilad in October 2024.
The site is the argument. It stands directly beside the Palace of Culture and Science, Stalin's gift to Warsaw and the most contested building in Poland, and the deliberate plainness of the new museum against that tower is the point.
The collection covers Polish and international art since the 1960s, with strong holdings of Polish conceptual and neo-avant-garde work — artists who operated under censorship and whose strategies were shaped by it.
The programme is active and admission to the collection is free.
