The Weltmuseum holds over 400,000 objects gathered through Austrian imperial expeditions, scientific voyages and Habsburg acquisition, and it has spent the past decade confronting how they arrived.
The Mexican feather headdress associated with Moctezuma is the most contested object in Austria — Mexico has requested its return for decades, and conservators argue it is too fragile to move. The museum displays it alongside that debate rather than in spite of it.
Other holdings include the Cook collection from the Pacific voyages, Benin bronzes, Brazilian and Amazonian material, Japanese and Chinese collections, and the Franz Ferdinand acquisitions from his world tour.
The 2017 rehang made colonialism, collecting and provenance explicit themes, which is why this museum is now cited as a model by institutions elsewhere.
