The Wien Museum reopened at the end of 2023 after a five-year rebuild that added a floating upper storey to the 1959 building on Karlsplatz, and the permanent exhibition is now free.
It runs from the Neolithic settlements in the Danube basin through Roman Vindobona, the Babenberg and Habsburg city, the Turkish sieges, the demolition of the walls and the construction of the Ringstrasse, to Red Vienna and the Anschluss.
The holdings that matter most are the fin-de-siècle ones: Klimt's portraits and drawings, Schiele, Loos's own apartment reassembled room by room, Otto Wagner's architectural models and furniture, and the material of the Secession years when this city produced more consequential art and thought than almost anywhere.
The Anschluss and the persecution of Vienna's Jews are addressed directly.
