Leonardo left thousands of manuscript pages of machine designs that were never built, and Leonardo3 exists to build them — physical models and interactive 3D reconstructions produced by a research team working directly from the codices, over 200 of them.
Visitors operate many of the models, which is unusual: the mechanical lion, the flying machines, the self-propelled cart, the war machines and the hydraulic devices.
The digital restorations of the paintings, including the Last Supper studied at high resolution, run alongside, together with the interactive Codex Atlanticus that allows the notebooks to be turned and read.
The engineering scholarship is serious, and several reconstructions have corrected earlier interpretations of the drawings.
It sits on Piazza della Scala in central Milan; the actual Last Supper is a separate ticket across town and books out months ahead.
