Banpo is a Neolithic village of the Yangshao culture, occupied around 4500 BC on the Chan river outside Xi'an, excavated from 1954 and covered by a museum hall in 1958 — the first site museum in China, built directly over the excavation.
What is preserved is the settlement itself: house foundations, storage pits, kilns, a defensive ditch, and a cemetery, laid out with the living area, pottery works and burial ground separated.
The painted pottery is the culture's signature, particularly the basins with human faces and fish motifs whose meaning is still debated, and the museum holds the finest examples.
The matriarchal interpretation offered here reflects mid-century Chinese archaeology and is no longer widely accepted, which is worth knowing.
