Abdülhamid II moved the Ottoman court from Dolmabahçe to Yıldız in 1877 and ruled from it for three decades — a sultan who feared assassination, who built a hillside compound of pavilions and workshops rather than a single palace, and who was deposed in 1909.
The complex reflects that character: scattered kiosks in a wooded park above the Bosphorus, a theatre, a mosque, and the imperial porcelain factory that still produces.
The Şale Köşkü, built for visiting heads of state including Kaiser Wilhelm II, holds the most elaborate interiors, with a hall carpeted by a single enormous Hereke rug.
Abdülhamid was a skilled carpenter and made furniture himself, some of it displayed.
The park is one of the largest green spaces in Istanbul.
