Museu da Amazônia (MUSA)

Set within preserved rainforest on the outskirts of Manaus, MUSA combines a scientific research center with public trails, a canopy tower, and exhibits on Amazonian ecology, offering visitors an accessible introduction to the rainforest’s biodiversity.

MUSA functions as a research institution first and a visitor attraction second, and that shapes what you get. It occupies part of the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve, a 100-square-kilometre block of primary Amazon forest on the edge of Manaus that has become one of the most intensively studied tropical forest plots in the world — decades of botanical and ecological research have been conducted here, and the museum's collections and gardens serve that work.

For visitors, the offering is access rather than display: marked trails through genuine primary forest, living collections of orchids, bromeliads and palms, an aquarium of Amazonian fish including pirarucu, and the canopy tower, 42 metres of steel stairs opening onto a view across unbroken forest.

The forest is dense and wildlife sightings are unpredictable, which is honest rather than disappointing — this is real habitat, not a park.

Heat, humidity and insects are serious; repellent, water and closed shoes matter.
