The American Prohibition Museum is the only museum in the United States devoted to the thirteen years when alcohol was illegal, and Savannah is an apt place for it — the city was notoriously wet throughout, with a local trade in smuggled liquor running through the port. Thirteen galleries in the historic City Market cover the temperance movement that produced the Eighteenth Amendment, the enforcement that followed, the bootleggers and rum-runners, and the cultural aftermath, using over 200 artefacts, life-size dioramas with animatronic figures, and restored Prohibition-era vehicles including a bootlegger's car.

The museum ends where the period's culture actually lived: a working speakeasy bar, entered through a concealed door, serving period cocktails. That combination — history exhibition followed by a functioning bar — is unusual, and it makes the visit work as an evening activity as much as an afternoon one.

Allow around ninety minutes for the galleries, longer if you stay for a drink. It sits centrally in Savannah's historic district, easy to combine with the squares and River Street.
