The Webb Military Museum is one man's collection, assembled by Gary Webb over decades and opened to the public in a townhouse on Bull Street, and its organising principle is the individual rather than the campaign.
Objects from the Civil War through both world wars, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm are displayed with the stories of the specific people who carried them — a name, a unit, what happened to them — which produces a different effect from the national institutions that necessarily work at the scale of armies.
Around 5,000 items are shown, including uniforms, weapons, decorations, letters and captured material from all sides.
Savannah's own military history is substantial: the siege of 1779, the city's fall to Sherman in 1864, and Hunter Army Airfield today.
