The Denver Art Museum is architecturally unmistakable: Daniel Libeskind's Hamilton Building of 2006 is a jagged titanium-clad form of sharp angles and leaning walls, joined to Gio Ponti's 1971 Martin Building, a fortress-like tower faced in a million grey glass tiles — the Italian architect's only completed building in North America.
The collection's greatest strength is Indigenous Arts of North America, among the most significant such holdings anywhere, assembled from the 1920s when almost no American museum treated Native work as art rather than ethnography. It is now curated in partnership with Native communities.
Western American art, Spanish colonial material, Asian and African collections, textiles, and modern and contemporary work fill out over 70,000 objects.
The building's angled galleries divide opinion — some find them exhilarating, others find them hostile to hanging pictures.
