Margaret Brown survived the Titanic, and the "unsinkable Molly Brown" of the musical and the film is largely invention — she was never called Molly in her lifetime. The real woman is more interesting: born poor in Missouri, married to a mining engineer whose strike made them wealthy, she became a suffragist, a campaigner for miners' rights and children's welfare, ran for the Senate before women could vote nationally, and worked with survivors after the sinking, refusing to let her lifeboat return to shore without searching for people in the water.
Her Denver house, a Victorian stone building she bought in 1894, was saved from demolition in 1970 and restored. The interiors are furnished to the period using the family's own photographs, and the tours cover her activism as much as the Titanic.
