The Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in Europe, founded in 1924 when the newly independent republic set about assembling a record of the rural culture it had just become a state on the basis of. Some 118 historical buildings were dismantled in villages across all four Latvian regions — Kurzeme, Vidzeme, Zemgale and Latgale — and rebuilt here on a wooded lakeshore site north-east of Riga, covering rural life from the seventeenth century to the mid-twentieth.

The scale is considerable: farmsteads with their barns, threshing houses and bathhouses, windmills, a Latgalian Orthodox wooden church, a fishing village on the shore of Lake Jugla, and craft workshops that are staffed in season. Buildings are furnished, so the visit is domestic rather than purely architectural, and the regional differences are the substance of it — you can read Baltic German, Russian and Polish influence in the construction as you move between areas.

The site is spread over nearly 90 hectares of pine forest, so this is a walk rather than a museum circuit, and weather matters. It is reached easily from central Riga by bus. Allow two to three hours.
