Riga Art Nouveau Centre

The Riga Art Nouveau Centre is the only museum in the Baltic States dedicated to the Art Nouveau heritage, located in a 1903 building designed by architect Konstantīns Pēkšēns.

Riga holds more art nouveau buildings than any other city in Europe — roughly a third of the centre was built in the style during a construction boom between 1904 and 1914, and the UNESCO listing rests substantially on that.

The Art Nouveau Centre occupies a 1903 apartment building designed by Konstantins Peksens, one of the leading Latvian architects of the period, who lived here himself. The apartment has been restored to its original condition and furnished as a middle-class home of around 1903 — furniture, ceramics, textiles, clothing and household objects, with staff sometimes in period dress.

The spiral staircase in the entrance hall, with its painted ceiling and curving iron rail, is among the most photographed interiors in Latvia.

The museum functions as the interpretive key to the streets outside, particularly Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela, where Mikhail Eisenstein's exuberant facades — masks, sphinxes, screaming faces — line the road.
