Foam is the reason Amsterdam matters on the photography circuit. Opened in 2001 in a canal house on Keizersgracht, it shows contemporary photography across the full range — documentary, fashion, conceptual, journalistic — mixing major international names with emerging photographers, and it changes exhibitions frequently enough that repeat visits reward. The Foam Talent programme, which identifies photographers early in their careers, has a good record of picking people who go on to matter.

The building works in its favour: a seventeenth-century merchant's house with modern white gallery spaces inserted, so you move between original staircases and contemporary rooms. It is compact, taking an hour or so, which makes it easy to add to a day of larger museums.

The magazine Foam publishes is well regarded internationally, and the bookshop reflects that — one of the better photography book selections in the Netherlands.

It sits on the canal ring within walking distance of the Rijksmuseum and the flower market. The main booking is an adult entry ticket.
