Grand Palace

The Grand Palace is a historic complex in Bangkok, Thailand, serving as the official residence of Thai kings since 1782. It houses the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and several museums.

The Grand Palace is Bangkok's principal sight and its most demanding, and knowing what to expect materially improves the visit. Built from 1782 when Rama I moved the capital across the river, the walled complex covers over 200,000 square metres of throne halls, pavilions and offices, all in glittering gilt, coloured glass mosaic and porcelain. The kings no longer live here, but it remains in ceremonial use.

Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is inside the walls and is the holiest site in Thailand. The Buddha itself is small — 66 centimetres of jade — seated high on a gilded altar, and its robes are changed three times a year by the king. Photography inside the ordination hall is forbidden.

Practicalities matter here. Dress code is strictly enforced: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, no see-through fabric, no sandals for some visitors. Crowds are heavy from mid-morning; arriving at opening is the single best decision available. Scammers outside claiming the palace is closed are a persistent fixture and should be ignored.
