Museum Siam asks what Thainess actually is, and treats the question as genuinely open. Its permanent exhibition, Decoding Thainess, works through the history of the Thai kingdoms, the influences absorbed from India, China, the Khmer and the West, and the deliberate construction of national identity in the twentieth century — a more self-aware and playful approach than state museums in the region usually attempt, using interactive multimedia rather than display cases.

The building is a restored neoclassical former Ministry of Commerce on Sanam Chai Road, in the old royal district.

Its position is the practical advantage: it sits minutes from the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, which most visitors are seeing anyway, and it provides the context those sites do not. Doing Museum Siam first makes the temples legible.

Sanam Chai MRT station is directly outside, one of the more beautiful metro stations anywhere.
