The Barcelona branch of the Hash Marihuana and Hemp Museum, opened in 2012, has one substantial advantage over its Amsterdam parent: the building. It occupies Palau Mornau, a Gothic palace remodelled in 1905 by Manuel Raspall, a contemporary of Gaudi, into one of the finer Modernista interiors in the city — stained glass, carved woodwork, mosaic and ironwork throughout, restored over several years and largely unvisited before the museum took it on.

The collection of over 9,000 cannabis-related objects covers the same ground as Amsterdam: hemp's industrial history in rope, textile and paper, medicinal use across cultures, prohibition politics, and cultural representation, with paintings, photographs, pipes, pharmacy bottles and documents.

For many visitors the palace justifies the ticket regardless of interest in the subject, and the two together make an unusual combination — Catalan Modernista architecture as the setting for a social history of a plant.
