The Heidi Horten Collection opened in 2022 in a converted building beside the Albertina in central Vienna, presenting the private holdings of one of Austria's wealthiest women — Klimt, Schiele, Chagall, Picasso, Warhol, Basquiat, Bacon, Hirst and Koons, assembled over decades and rarely shown publicly before her death.
The collection is genuinely strong, particularly in postwar and contemporary work, and the building — a former administrative office remodelled with a stone façade and a sculptural staircase — makes an elegant setting.
It comes with controversy that the museum has been pressed on: the fortune originated with Helmut Horten, Heidi Horten's first husband, a German businessman who built his retail empire in the 1930s partly by acquiring Jewish-owned department stores under forced-sale conditions during Aryanisation. The museum commissioned historical research and addresses the provenance question, but the debate around it has been prominent in Austrian cultural discussion, and visitors should know the background.
