Huaca Pucllana is a pyramid in the middle of Miraflores, Lima's smart residential district — a stepped adobe structure some 25 metres high and covering several hectares, built by the Lima culture between roughly 200 and 700 AD, now surrounded by apartment blocks and restaurants. The incongruity is the first thing visitors register.
The construction technique is the distinctive part: millions of small mud bricks set on end with gaps between them, like books on a shelf, which allowed the structure to flex and survive the earthquakes that have flattened much of what came later. It functioned as an administrative and ceremonial centre, and excavation has recovered burials, ceramics and evidence of the ritual activity conducted there, including offerings of marine life.
Visits are by guided tour only, walking up the ramps and terraces, and the site is floodlit at night, which many find the better time to go. A small museum displays finds, and a park holds native flora and the camelids and Peruvian hairless dogs of the period.
