Museo Larco is widely considered the best pre-Columbian museum in Peru, and it does several things others do not. Rafael Larco Hoyle founded it in 1926 in an eighteenth-century mansion built over a seventh-century pyramid, and the building — white walls smothered in bougainvillea, around courtyards — is part of why the visit is pleasant rather than merely instructive.
The collection covers 5,000 years across Peruvian cultures, with the Moche holdings pre-eminent: portrait vessels of individual faces modelled with startling realism, and the gold and silver funerary ornaments from elite burials. The storage gallery is the museum's signature — 45,000 catalogued vessels on open shelving, visible to the public rather than hidden in a basement, which conveys the sheer scale of production.
The erotic pottery gallery, in a separate building, holds Moche ceramics depicting sexual acts, displayed with serious ethnographic interpretation rather than titillation.
