Humayun's Tomb is the building that led to the Taj Mahal — the first monumental garden tomb in the Mughal style, completed in 1572 for the second emperor, commissioned by his widow, and the model from which the later, more famous mausoleum descends. The charbagh garden divided by watercourses, the high central dome, the red sandstone with white marble inlay: the vocabulary is established here.
The site museum, opened in July 2024, is largely underground so as not to intrude on the monument, and it covers seven centuries of the surrounding Nizamuddin area rather than the tomb alone — the Sufi shrine of Nizamuddin Auliya that made this ground sacred and drew the Mughal burials to it, the poets buried nearby including Amir Khusrau and Ghalib, and the layered heritage of the whole precinct. Over 500 artefacts are shown with digital reconstruction and interpretation.
The conservation story is itself notable: the Aga Khan Trust's long restoration of the tomb and gardens is documented, including the removal of British-era alterations.
